The Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street, in cooperation with Humanities Nebraska and the Buffalo County Historical Society/Trails & Rails Museum, presents “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” from June 5 – July 10. There is a grand opening for the exhibit on June 5 from 3pm – 5pm with refreshments provided by the Ft. Kearny chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

“Voices and Votes” explores the action, reaction, vision, and revision that democracy demands as Americans continue to question how to shape the country. From the Revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story—the story of democracy in America. Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the struggles to obtain and keep the vote, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. “Voices and Votes” features historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.

According to Broc Anderson, the Community Engagement Director for the Trails & Rails Museum, this exhibition fits in perfectly with Kearney’s sesquicentennial anniversary. “When our founders first came to Kearney back in the 1870s, they were deeply intertwined with many of the democratic principles that Voices and Votes examines in it’s displays,” said Anderson. Additionally, Voices and Votes is a free and/or a free-will donation exhibit because of Humanities Nebraska’s efforts to tour it through Nebraska. According to Anderson, “without Humanities Nebraska, this exhibition would not be possible in Kearney. So, we owe a lot to them in bringing Voices and Votes to us for our community and across the state.” Prior to Kearney, Voices and Votes was in Howells, Nebraska where Anderson and two other UNK History Department graduate students, Nicholas Knuth and Tatiana Moore, attended a workshop where they learned how to set up the exhibit. After July 10, the exhibit travels to the Thayer County Historical Society in Belvidere, Nebraska.

As part of the Kearney 150th year-long celebration, people wishing to participate in other fun activities can go to www.bchs.us or look at the Kearney 150 Facebook page to see all of the events that are coming up.
