Certified Police Officer

The University of Nebraska Kearney Police Department (UNKPD) operates as a professional, fully armed law enforcement agency comprised of State of Nebraska Certified Police Officers. These officers are sworn and authorized under the laws of the State of Nebraska. UNK Police Officers actively patrol both the campus and its surrounding community, responding to both emergency and non-emergency service calls. They are tasked with enforcing laws, including Nebraska motor vehicle regulations, and have the authority to issue citations or warnings as necessary, while also preparing required reports. The department is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of everyone on the UNK campus and frequently collaborates with other law enforcement agencies, performing additional duties as directed.
 
Enforce all state laws, city codes, and UNK regulations with diligence. Respond promptly to criminal, civil, and medical incidents, conducting thorough investigations and making arrests when appropriate, while ensuring all necessary documentation is completed accurately. Investigate traffic accidents, ensuring the proper paperwork is filed. Uphold Nebraska motor vehicle laws by issuing citations or warnings as needed and preparing the corresponding reports.

Conduct regular patrols across the UNK campus to maintain safety and security for all individuals present. Complete building checks to verify that all entry points are secure and that individuals within the buildings are authorized to be there. Provide security during events held on the UNK campus and respond to fire and burglar alarms, sending alert notifications as per established policy.

Enforce all parking regulations on campus and deliver safety programs designed for students, faculty, and staff. Lock and unlock buildings as necessary and grant access to authorized personnel when required. Oversee the maintenance of Police and Parking Services vehicles. Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and undertake additional duties as assigned.

Opportunities for overtime through on-campus activities and athletic events are available, in addition to encouraging participation in both in-state and out-of-state training programs at UNK PD. There are also avenues to assist and train fellow law enforcement officers throughout Nebraska.
 
Required Qualifications:  
Hold a valid Nebraska Law Enforcement Certification. High School education or GED. Must be 21 years of age. Requires a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
 
Preferred Qualifications:  
College degree and experience in related field. Ability to speak/understand a second language.
