Five Practical Energy-Saving Tips for Fall
October is National Energy Awareness Month

Kearney, Nebraska – Oct. 14, 2024 – As temperatures begin to drop, many of us are preparing our homes for the cooler months ahead. During National Energy Awareness Month, Black Hills Energy is offering five practical tips to help customers save energy and lower bills:

  1. Check Air Filters and Clear Dust: To keep your HVAC system running smoothly, it’s important to swap out air filters every three months. This is also a time to check and remove any dust or debris that may have collected near vents or large appliances, like your fridge and oven. A thorough cleaning can make your systems run more effectively, so they’re using less energy and saving you money.
  2. Lower your thermostat: Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable on cold days. A smart or programmable thermostat can make it easy to efficiently maintain your preferred temperature
  3. Run complete loads of laundry and dishes: Avoid using more hot water and energy than necessary.
  4. Skip the drying cycle on your dishwasher: Instead, prop the door open once dishes are washed and allow them to air dry.
  5. Keep out drafts: Use weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows to seal any holes or gaps, reducing energy waste.

“During the cold weather months, it takes more energy to keep homes warm and comfortable,” said Kevin Jarosz, Black Hills Energy vice president of operations. “We recognize the impact that cost increases have on our customers, especially at times of high inflation. That’s why we’re helping our customers find ways to use less energy through our energy efficiency programs and rebates. We’ve also increased our efforts to provide support for customers, including launching a new Energy Assistance team to help our most vulnerable customers access programs and resources to help make their bills more affordable.”
