Custodian
Job Description or Duties: The Facilities Planning and Management Department is seeking applications for a full-time, first shift, Custodian to provide daily cleaning services to the areas of student housing, academic buildings and sport facilities. Clean all windows, doors, frames, and walls utilizing industrial cleaners and additional cleaning equipment. Starting pay is $15.00. Clean athletic areas including bleachers, gym floor and walkways. Clean bathrooms and water fountains including use of industrial cleaners, restocking supplies, mopping/cleaning floors, mirrors, toilets, and stalls, and removing trash. Clean classrooms, offices, and conference rooms utilizing industrial cleaners and additional equipment. Clean stairs, rails, and landings utilizing dust mops, wet mops, backpack or floor vacuum, and other cleaning equipment. Cleaning locker rooms and showers including use of industrial cleaners, restocking supplies, mopping/cleaning floors, mirrors, toilets, stalls, showering area, lockers, seating, and removing trash. Clean floor using commercial cleaners, and equipment including vacuum, dust mop, carpet extractor, scrubber, sweeper, and additional hand equipment. Collect and remove trash and recycling from all receptacles and deposit into appropriate bins or pick-up areas. Remove and re-wax floors including scraping the base plate, mopping, applying chemical strippers, dry vacuuming, and reapplying multiple layers of wax utilizing various pieces of equipment. Perform minor and routine maintenance including changing light bulbs, repairing custodial equipment, and similar duties, utilizing ladders and hand equipment. Remove snow from entryways, steps, and sidewalks within 15 feet of all doors and adjacent steps, using a shovel and/or snow blower, and disperse ice melt. Set-up and tear-down for special events including moving chairs, tables, risers, railing, band equipment, and other equipment. Other duties may include: Move equipment and furniture to complete cleaning functions of buildings utilizing hand carts, lifts, etc. Lock and unlock interior and exterior building doors for access to cleaning and set-up for special events. Train other custodians on proper use of equipment and techniques for their use, based on Department established standards. Operate motorized devices for pulling out and pushing in the bleachers for special events. Operate a hydraulic lift for changing lights and general cleaning of high areas. Perform maintenance on bleachers to ensure they are in proper working order. Drive cleaning machine to perform cleaning of indoor track.
Required Qualifications: A High school diploma/GED education or a combination of education, training or work experience that will enable the incumbent to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions, travel up and down stairs, climb, stoop, bend, and work from ladders or platforms at various heights. Interpersonal and communications skills as performed in a critical customer service capacity interacting with residents, department staff, campus staff and community external.
The successful candidate must complete prior to the start of employment post-offer employment testing, to ensure they can complete the physical demands of the job, and a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications: Prefer applicant with a high school diploma (or GED), one year of custodial experience, a valid driver’s license and has received vaccination for Hepatitis B.
Physical Demands: Heavy for lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of forces up to 50 pounds for up to one-third of the hours worked daily, 25 to 50 pounds for more than one-third but not more than two-thirds of the hours worked daily, or 10 to 20 pounds for more than two-thirds of the hours worked daily. Ability to maintain a steady pace for seven and a half hours per day. Ability to work with industrial chemicals use by department. Must pass or have passed functional capacity examination. Work Environment: Custodians perform the majority of their work indoors with some instances of extreme heat (due to lack of air conditioning) and some instances of outdoor exposure (removing trash, scooping snow/ice, cleaning windows and moving between buildings).
